heya, thank you for a great show.
recently, this news piece broke about links to excess saturated fat in the form of coconut oil with tumours – http://www.uphs.upenn.edu/news/News_Releases/2016/09/lambris/
I am a little confused by all of this and wondering your take? is this credible?
Jesse Chappus says
Thanks for listening Mattinsa!
Interesting info but I see they grouped corn and coconut oils together… to me there is a big difference between the two. Is this corn GMO?!?
Seems like credible research though.
Thanks for sharing!

Hi Jesse and Marni, I’ve been listening to your excellent podcast for about a year now but I’ve just listened to this podcast back to back with Rich Roll’s podcast with Dr Neal Barnard (#242). Both covered saturated fats but with different conclusions.
Your podcast referenced a meta analysis on whether saturated fats are healthy or not and Dr Barnard also references a meta analysis (maybe the same one?) but his conclusion is that saturated fats are bad, particularly from animal sources, whereas you don’t seem to make any distinction.
I’m not a medical expert, merely someone trying to find my way through conflicting evidence.
Have you read any of Dr Barnard’s material or heard his conversation with Rich Roll?
Do you have any thoughts on the apparent difference of opinion?
Thanks and keep up the good work.

Hi Dan,
Thank you for being a longtime listener of our show, we appreciate it!
I know Rich interviewed Dr. Barnard but I haven’t listened to it, we also interviewed him on episode #121. Dr. Barnard does have a different opinion compared to Marni, myself, and a number of our guests. The other tricky part is that many of us evolve in what we eat/our opinions on healthy food. This makes things confusing, I know.
Marni and I try and interview the full spectrum of expert health so people can hear it all and then go and test and see what works best for them. We are all different and have different nutritional requirements at different points in our lives.
I know this doesn’t clarify your question directly but health and nutrition aren’t black and white.
Keep experimenting, getting lab work done, and observe how you feel.
Wishing you all the best!
Jesse

Thank you for this. I certainly was highly influenced by the low fat craze of the 80’s, a time I probably most needed it as a developing teen. Now, as a fitness professional, I am saddened by what we’ve done to our bodies. I use MCT oil almost daily. Avocados and almonds are highly regarded in our home.
Jesse Chappus says
So happy you enjoyed Wendy, thx for listening! MCT oil, avos, and almonds are on our fave list too 😉
